The Need for Diversity

Updated: Oct 3, 2022

In recent years, there has been an increase in discussion within the media about the need for diversity within the American college presidency and, more specifically, about the dearth of Asian Pacific Islander American leaders within U.S. higher education (Chui, 2010; Gammage, 2012; Lum, 2008; Lum, 2009; Saigo, 2008). The increased attention alone, however, is not enough to aid in advancing Asian Pacific Islander American leadership within U.S. higher education. As with creating change on campus, action on the part of both institutions and individuals will be necessary to bring about a significant increase in the number of Asian Pacific Islander American leaders. Institutions may need to establish programs to support leadership development of diverse candidates, from junior-level faculty on up, while individuals may need to uncover their own biases in order to look past them to see the talent that may be right in front of them in the form of an Asian Pacific Islander American potential leader.
